Short answer: check the day, then your interest
Choose Topkapı for palace courtyards and historic architecture, or Istanbul Modern for a visit focused on contemporary art exhibitions. In the normal weekly schedule, Topkapı closes on Tuesday and Istanbul Modern on Monday. On a rainy day when it is open, concentrating on Istanbul Modern’s galleries reduces the outdoor component. Make one museum the anchor of this part of your day. First remove the option that is closed. Then decide what you actually want to spend time on: the relationship between buildings and courtyards, or an exhibition you have selected. Keep the second museum for a separate day if possible. A longer first visit should not turn the afternoon into a race.
Your decision card
This is a selection tool rather than a quality ranking. Someone who wants only contemporary art on a Monday can move the museum visit to another day. An open palace is not automatically the right substitute for that person.

- Tuesday and a contemporary art interest: check Istanbul Modern’s exhibitions and visitor page; Topkapı’s normal Tuesday closure removes the palace option.
- Other days, with courtyards as your priority: choose Topkapı alone and narrow your intended focus and resting needs.
- Other days, with exhibitions or rain as your priority: confirm Istanbul Modern is open and concentrate on its galleries.
- If prolonged standing is difficult: consider Istanbul Modern’s portable gallery stools and ask about a loan wheelchair when buying your ticket. These services do not establish the accessibility of your journey.
Two separate starting points on the map
Topkapı’s official address is Cankurtaran Mahallesi, Babı Hümayun Caddesi No:1, Sultanahmet/Fatih. Istanbul Modern’s visitor address is on Tophane İskele Caddesi in Beyoğlu. Use the official address and map links to locate your chosen entrance; a line between them does not establish a walking time or a continuous accessible route. If you already plan to be around Sultanahmet, consider how the palace fits. If your day is around Tophane, consider the contemporary museum. Geography should inform the choice without replacing your interest. Allocate inter-district travel separately.
A personal 150-minute allowance
One planning example reserves 30 minutes for arrival and entry, 90 for a selected exhibition or palace focus, and 30 for rests: 30 + 90 + 30 = 150 minutes. This is a personal limit, not an official tour duration or a promise to cover the whole museum. Travel between districts is excluded. If entry takes longer, reduce the chosen focus before removing rests. A fictional visitor could drop a second exhibition goal. Keep ticket-office closing, last admission and the end of a visit separate: they are different rules and should not be treated as interchangeable finishing times.
Build the budget around admission scope
The budget basis is one adult entering one chosen museum. Istanbul Modern says its museum ticket covers all exhibitions; cinema, food and transport are outside this example. For Topkapı, check the admission scope of the sections you want. Do not assume every section is included on the same terms. No numerical tariff or discount saving is assumed here. Choose the admission you need before checking the current price. Comparing only entry prices can hide travel and resting needs. Remove activities you do not intend to use before allocating money to them.
Rain and reduced-standing alternatives
When Istanbul Modern is open, a gallery-only visit can replace the palace courtyard plan in rain. Neither the approach nor an entry queue is certified sheltered. Its visitor guide documents portable stools and asks visitors needing a loan wheelchair to notify staff during ticket purchase. Discuss your requirements with the museum; do not transfer this evidence to Topkapı’s grounds or the connecting journey. If fatigue increases, keep the single-museum choice and reduce its scope.
Check before leaving
The official sources were reopened on 17 October 2026. Check special notices for your actual date alongside weekly closures. The 2025 religious-holiday dates still visible on Istanbul Modern’s page must not become a 2026 calendar. Recheck last entry, ticket scope, open sections and required services.
