Paris Neighbourhood Plan

A flexible Marais plan: Carnavalet first, Place des Vosges optional

Short answer: protect the museum, keep the walk optional

When Carnavalet is open, make it the anchor of your Marais day and add Place des Vosges only if the weather and your energy suit an outdoor break. In rain, or when you want less walking, keep just the museum. On Monday, move the collection visit to another day. This plan is for an individual visitor who wants culture and an optional outdoor pause in one neighbourhood.

Choose your priority before adding stops: selected collection rooms, or time outdoors? The Louvre–Orsay choice is a different decision. Here, the useful choice is which part you can remove without losing the reason you came. Treat the square as an addition rather than a second obligation.

Two location pins, no compulsory connecting walk

The visitor entrance is at 23 rue Madame de Sévigné, 75003 Paris. Locate it through the [official practical information](https://www.carnavalet.paris.fr/en/visit/pratical-information). For Place des Vosges, use the location link in the [Paris tourism office’s Marais guide](https://parisjetaime.com/article/a-la-decouverte-du-marais-a1070). Save the two points separately so that removing the square leaves your museum destination intact.

Plan your arrival from your own starting point. No measured walking time or assurance of accessibility for the whole connection is provided here. If you add the square, check your chosen connection on a current map. Nearby buildings do not become additional indoor visits in this plan.

Check the visit type and day first

Official information checked on 17 October 2026 says individual access to the permanent collections is free without booking. Temporary exhibitions charge admission; group visits require booking. Do not extend the free-entry rule to every activity or kind of visit.

The normal weekly schedule is Tuesday to Sunday. Do not plan the collections for Monday. Reopen the official page before your visit for annual exceptions and entry arrangements. Closing time is different from last admission: make sure your chosen visit block fits the permitted entry window rather than aiming for the end of the day.

Your decision checklist

  • Museum first: check the day and entry conditions, then add the square afterwards only if you still want it.
  • Outdoors first: start with Place des Vosges in suitable weather, but protect the museum time or move the collections to another day.
  • Rain with the museum open: remove the square and focus on the permanent collections. Do not assume the approach or queue is sheltered.
  • Monday: defer the indoor visit. Consider the outdoor option if weather permits; do not assume an unresearched replacement museum is open.
  • Less walking: use the museum as your single destination, omit the connection and ask reception about seating and access support.

A bounded time and budget example

As a personal planning allocation, reserve 2 hours for selected Carnavalet rooms and rests, plus an optional 30-minute square stop. That is 120 + 30 = 150 minutes, excluding connecting travel, waiting and the journey from your starting point. These are discretionary time caps, not measured tour lengths. With less time, reduce the room selection or drop the square.

The budget baseline covers one individual’s admission to the permanent collections, currently free. It does not make the whole day cost-free: transport, meals, activities, temporary exhibitions and group arrangements remain separate. Write optional spending on a different line from collection admission.

Rest support and a final check

The museum’s [visit preparation page](https://www.carnavalet.paris.fr/en/visit/plan-your-visit) lists folding seats and wheelchairs for visitors with mobility issues; ask at reception. Borrowed equipment stays inside the museum. Its stated reduced-mobility access concerns the venue, not your entire journey or the square connection. Confirm specific needs with the museum before travelling.

Before leaving, note your day, visit type, single address and removable stop. If the main museum choice remains unresolved, read the [Paris Louvre–Orsay comparison](/travel/paris-louvre-orsay-muze-gunu). If Vienna is also on your trip, explore the same single-focus choice in the [Vienna culture-day guide](/travel/viyana-khm-schonbrunn-kultur-secimi). A useful day leaves room for the visit you value instead of requiring both boxes to be ticked.
